Tecun Uman is the national hero of Guatemala. His birthdate is unknown, but his death was documented as happening on February 20, 1524. He was one of the last rulers of the K'iche' Maya people, in the highlands of what is now Guatemala. He was killed by being slain by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Alvarado while waging war against the Spanish and their allies. Although his life was not well documented, he is celebrated through statues, poems, and legends about his life.
