The Guatemalan people are mostly Mestizo, a combination of Spanish and Maya blood, While many of the local villagers are of direct Maya descendants. Guatemalan history was hugely affected by the Maya civilization that lived in Guatemala for nearly 600 years before the Maya culture collapsing around 900 AD. Guatemalan foods varies upon the region, although many traditional Guatemalan foods are based off Maya recipes. Most of the Guatemalan foods consist of corn, chilies and beans. and the main crop of the Maya was Corn Maize. |
Another important part of the Guatemalan culture is the music. Guatemalan people are known for their percussion bands featuring the marimba, the national instrument. Another part of Guatemalan culture that is based off the maya is the clothes. Many of the hats, capes, dresses and skirts are very bright and colorful, which is a design of the Mayas, who were fond of colorful clothes.
